CONCEPT:
The word "detachment" describes a psychological,
physical, emotional state. It also refers to
a military unit separated from the main force for
a special task; and the act of sending out a detached
force of troops or naval ships. But it is the
meaning referring to a state of aloofness, apathetic,
not caring about worldly affairs, without concern
of other people or anything; freedom from prejudice
or partiality that I have in mind as the theme of
the show. But the artists have total freedom to interpret
the title. The word "Detachment" bears an especially
strong meaning to me.
My father's acceptance of his cancer struck me and
left an indelible mark in my mind and heart. For
a long time I didn't know how to describe his reaction.
A healthy, strong, well fit middle-aged man
suddenly being diagnosed with that horrifying disease,
listening to the doctor's verdict, he sat on the examination
table with a smile on his face, nodding, unmoved,
without asking any question. My mother and I
couldn't maintain our composure. It was like
a thunderbolt exploding on our head. We hated the
doctor. He was our enemy. I sought for words
to describe my father's reaction to the bad news.
Calm? Unperturbed? Complacent? Dignified? No,
"detached." Yes. He was totally
detached. DZ

Concept
The word "Empathy" means mental entering into the
feeling or spirit of a person or thing. An actor feels
what the character he portrays feels. He identifies
himself with the character. He thinks he is
that character. A famous Taoist philosopher
of the 4th century B.C., Zhuang Zhou, thinks of himself
as a butterfly. He feels the freedom and happiness
of the butterfly. The tragedy of September 11
profoundly changed me. A foreign student at
first, who chose to reside in Boston, until 9/11,
I always regarded myself as a sojourner, a guest.
But during and after that horrifying tragedy,
I felt for the first time that I was an American.
I am empathetic with the ethos of America.
I feel the pain when a solder dies for this country.
I cry with the family members of the fallen
solders. It is this feeling that compelled me
to choose "Empathy" as the theme of this show. But
of course, each artist has total freedom to interpret
the meaning of the word.
