Jazz Concert Series

The Jazz Repertory Orchestra at the Tremont

We established two music series in 2001. One is a monthly Jazz concert series by our new jazz orchestre called The Carl Atkins/Bill Lowe Boston Jazz Repertory Orchestra at the Tremont Theater. The other is Tremont music series which offers one or more concerts each month.

The Jazz Repertory Orchestra at the Tremont is Boston's answer to the repertory big bands of New York (Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall) and Washington DC (Smithsonian). The ensemble was created to perform the big band music of both past masters and contemporary composers, across the full spectrum of African-American creative music, from the music of Duke Ellington to Charles Mingus and Sun Ra, to original compositions by special guests and members of the orchestra.

The orchestra's leaders are nationally acclaimed as performers and educators. Carl Atkins' experience includes Gunther Schuller, George Russell, Bil Evans, Jaki Byard, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Jimmy Owens, John Faddis, and many others, and he is on the faculty of the New England Conservatory of Music. Bill Lowe has worked with Frank Foster, Henry Threadgill, James 'Jabbo' Ware, Clark Terry, Thad Jones/Mel Lewis, Muhal Richard Abrams, Bill Barron, and many others, and is on the faculty of Northeastern University. The orchestra is made up of the top musicians from the Boston community, including acclaimed faculty members from Berklee School of Music, New England Conservatory, and Northeastern University.

In addition to showcasing the outstanding ensemble, the concert series will also feature special guest performers, composers, and arrangers throughout the year.
