Empathy--mental entering into the feeling or spirit of a person or thing.

An actor feels what the character he portrays feels.  He identifies himself with the character.  He thinks he is that character.
A famous Taoist philosopher of the 4th century B.C., Zhuang Zhou, thinks of himself as a butterfly.  He feels the freedom and happiness of the butterfly.
The tragedy of September 11 profoundly changed me.  A foreign student at first, who chose to reside in Boston, until 9/11,  I always regarded myself as a sojourner, a guest.  But during and after that horrifying tragedy, I felt for the first time that I was an American.  I am empathetic with the ethos of America.  I feel the pain when a solder dies for this country.  I cry with the family members of the fallen solders.  It is this feeling that compelled me to choose "Empathy" as the theme of this show. But of course, each artist has total freedom to interpret the meaning of the word.                                                                               Curator of the show

International Society is pleased to present a collection of new fashion designed by Li You-en. The event will take place on Saturday, Sept.8, at 8:00pm at the Tremont Theatre, 276 Tremont Street (next to the Wang Center,) Li You-en is a costume and scenery designer for the stage as well as a fashion designer trained by by Shanghai Drama Institute and Boston University's School for the Arts. He was a faculty of costume and make-up at his alma mater in Shanghai before coming to Boston. He spent years researching the clothing and adornments of the minority groups in southwest China. Eventually he contributed to the publication of a major work entitled Clothing and Adornments of China's Minority Nationalities. Inspired by the unusual decorative elements in the clothing of the different minority groups Li You-en set out to design this collection of apparel that fuses high fashion with ethnic motifs.

Jazz violinist Billy Bang returns to Boston as a bandleader for the first time in more that 15 years with a new quintet featuring his long time collaborator, tenor saxophonist Frank Lowe. A leading figure of the New York avant garde since the 1980s, Bang, has been praised in the Boston Phoenix for his "sonic explorations, grounded in the bedrock of African American music."

Early in his career, Bang made waves as a founding member of the String Trio of New York in which his streetwise, down-home feeling counterbalanced the more academic extremes of guitarist James Emery and bassist John Lindberg. In the '80s, his own albums as a leader, most notably The Fire From Within, Rainbow Gladiator, and Valve No. 10 (all on Soul Note) combined a reckless swing with a mile wide Romantic streak. Recording in the 1990s, primarily for the Canadian Justin Time label and with Chicago percussionist Kahil el Zabar, Bang has returned to the United States after a four-year stint in Berlin and is now recording prolifically once again. Recent releases include a reunion recording with Frank Lowe, One for Jazz (No More) and a new duet with el Zabar Spirits Entering (Delmark). The Vietnam Project, dedicated to his experiences in the Vietnam War, is forthcoming from Justin Time release. Saxophonist Lowe is one of Bang's most fruitful musical partners, appearing on eight albums with him, including Intensive Care (Cadillac) by The Jazz Doctors, which also featured the late drummer Denis Charles and the late bassist Raphael Garrett. Lowe combines a blistering, earthy swing indebted to the funky, hard-hitting sound of his native Memphis with the sonic urgency and abstractions of free jazz. Most of his classic albums of the 1980s are now out of print, but the recently reissued Duet Exchange (Knit Classics) with drummer Rashied Ali features some of his strongest playing on record. He recently released his first domestic recordings in more than a decade, the aforementioned One for Jazz with Billy Bang, and Soul Folks (both on No More records). The quintet that Bang brings to Boston features a strong rhythm section, including pianist Naoko Ono, bassist Todd Nicholson, and drummer Abbey Rader.

This is an all ages event, and tickets are available for $12 at the door. Public information and directions can be obtained at http://www.sublingual.com, or by calling (617) 542-4599. For further inquiries, contact Jonathan LaMaster at (781) 388-9855, info@sublingual.com.
